NEWPORT – A 74-year-old Waldport woman was killed Monday evening when her car went into the opposite lane of U.S. Highway 101 in the South Beach area of Newport and collided with an oncoming car.
Oregon State Police says Heidi Fay Rock of Waldport died after being taken to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital following the 5:39 p.m. crash.
Police said their preliminary investigation indicated Rock’s Chevrolet Monte Carlo was southbound on Highway 101 when for unknown reasons it crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a Honda Odyssey. Both cars ended up in the ditch on the east side of the highway.
Police said the Honda’s driver, Celeste D. Paulson, 38, of Newport, and a 6-year-old and 4-month-old passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The highway was impacted for approximately four hours, including a northbound detour through a nearby business center’s parking lot. State police were assisted by the Newport Police Department, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the Oregon Department of Transportation, Pacific West Ambulance, and fire departments from Newport and Waldport.
