YACHATS – A Roseburg man is in the Lincoln County jail after crashing his car Thursday in Yachats and fleeing into a neighborhood.
Oregon State Police were able to track Derick L. Weinhold, 32, and charged him with driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving after the 2:30 p.m. incident.
A report by Trooper Scott Severson said alcohol containers were found in Weinhold’s Hyundai and he showed signs of impairment when he was found a few blocks from the wreck.
Police took Weinhold to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital to evaluate his condition and then had to get a warrant for a blood draw when he refused a breath sample at the jail.

Something needs to be done about alcohol. It’s available to people with past infractions for alcohol, yet there they are doing it again.

This is completely inaccurate. He wasn’t drinking and driving I was actually on the phone with him (Bluetooth) when he wrecked. His 6 pack was still in vehicle minus the two he drank after the wreck. (Yes, he realized how stupid that decision was.) What caused him to crash was “self driving technology” Aka “lane departure system” and it went from a 55mph straight to a 25mph. And by the time he went to slow down, it was too late.
Mwidge says
The 25 mph zone started nearly a mile up the road from the wreck and before that it is 40. So why was he going 55?
PT Yachatian says
The speed limit is 40 mph in the area that he was driving 55 mph. Plus several folks reported that he was driving erratically and passing cars in no passing areas.

What a cop out, blame bad driving on self/robot driving technology. “Honest officer it was the robot’s fault” I’m sure they hear that a lot these days.
