Weather watchers for YachatsNews have confirmed what anyone who lives on the Oregon coast felt about April – it was cold and wet.
Rainfall for April was above twice the average in several places and two weather watchers said the average high temperature for the month – just under 52 degrees – was the coldest in 10 years of record keeping.
“Just like March, April was the wettest and coldest April that I have recorded,” said Adam Altson, who lives along Ocean View Drive in Yachats, and has been recording weather data there for 10 years. “Our high temperature was only 62, easily the coldest high I have measured for April, and our average high temperature was only 51.6 degrees.”
Donald Tucker, who lives two miles north of Yachats and east of U.S. Highway 101, calculated an average high temperature for April of 51.7 degrees – his lowest since 2011.
Tucker also recorded 9.21 inches of rain in April, slightly less than the previous April but three inches more than his 10-year average of 6.14 inches of rain. His rain total for 2023 is 35.40 inches.
Other weather watchers had similar results.
Staff at the city of Yachats’ wastewater treatment plant measured 8.45 inches of rain in April, for a four-month total of 33.02 inches. The city’s 10-year average for April is 6.06 inches.
Jim Adler, who lives three miles up the Yachats River, recorded 11.54 inches of rain in April – his 14-year average is 8.09 inches – and has 47.59 inches for the year.
And, Bob Williams who lives 10 miles up the Yachats River valley, recorded 13.26 inches of rain in April, for a 2023 total of 60.04 inches.
