NEWPORT – A 55-year-old man from Mill City drowned Friday when a 22-foot dory capsized near Nye Beach after it was struck by a breaking wave on a reef about a mile from the Yaquina Bay’s north jetty.
Oregon State Police said in a news release Monday that Cory Thompson was pronounced dead at Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital.
Two others in the boat, Milton Bridges, 60, and Laura Bridges, 59, also of Mill City, were saved and treated and released at the hospital.
Police said the mishap was reported at 9:50 a.m. Friday. Coast Guard personnel were able to pull all three from the water. Newport Fire Department Chief Rob Murphy told the Newport News-Times that two of the three individuals were conscious and one was unconscious. Milton Bridges was wearing a life jacket.
