A new art space opens Wednesday, Oct. 27 in Yachats, offering opportunities for creating art as well as selling and buying works.
Peephole Gallery-Studio is at 502 Hwy. 101 North, in the space next to that formerly occupied by The Laughing Crab, which moved to Florence.
Owned by Joyce Centofanti and Robert Conway of Seal Rock — who are partners in life and in the gallery — the 1,150-square-foot space will have a “soft” informal opening Oct. 27. A grand opening date is not yet set.
The space is about evenly divided: one side will feature high-end fine art, and the other will function as a studio and workshop area, plus selling goods like ceramics, cards and prints.
Centofanti is an artist and educator, and Conway owns Coast Equipment in Waldport. They bought the unit in late February, but have been delayed in opening by Covid restrictions and obtaining building permits. Centofanti will be focusing on the business, her first venture into running an art gallery.
“We hope this will be an active environment” with workshops, and “somewhat community-based” she said.
And that intriguing name? “The Peephole” is the name of Conway’s boat, and the term is rooted in works by novelist Kurt Vonnegut. In some of Vonnegut’s books, when someone is born they have their “peephole opened” and when they die, Vonnegut writes that the person had their “peephole closed.”
