The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has a new police dog.
Ghost, a 2-year-old male German Shepherd, replaces Bonni who retired in September after five years with the department.
The sheriff’s department said Wednesday that Ghost was born and raised in Germany where he had training and testing in tracking, obedience and protection. He was recently brought to Riverside, Calif. by Adlerhorst International where he was tested and selected by the department’s dog handler, Deputy Zachary Akin.
Over the next several months Akin and Ghost will begin training and bonding, the sheriff’s office said, and upon completion Akin and Ghost will be tested and certified as a team. After certification Ghost will accompany Akin on patrol.
Prior to Bonni’s arrival in 2015, the sheriff’s office had not operated a canine program since the 1980s.
Akin was able to adopt Bonni after her retirement in September.
