Finally, a name that only people in Yachats will understand.
A one-block portion of Driftwood Lane between West Sixth Street and the Yachats Commons has officially been re-named La De Da Lane as the result of a contest sponsored by the city.
The new name was suggested by three children because it is the staging area for the city’s annual July 4th whimsical parade. The Yachats City Council approved the change Oct. 21.
The new name was suggested by Sylvie Hood, 11, Olive Achinson, 12, and Alex Bursey, who each received a $50 cash prize.
The idea of a new name has its roots in controversy when some people opposed to a street paving project said they thought it was for the better-known portion of Driftwood Lane between West Seventh Street and Marine Drive. That led to the re-naming idea – and a more scaled down version of the project after public comment and a council vote to re-engineer the street.
The city has new plans and, with council permission, hopes to get bids for the project in January.
