WALDPORT – Matsutake collecting season this year on the Central Coast Ranger District will have a new, mail-in permit procedure.
Every year, 100 commercial permits are available on a first come, first served basis. Any person wishing to obtain a matsutake collection permit, should mail in a request form by Sept. 4.
“It’s highly recommended to use the mail in request, they will have top priority to acquire a permit,” said acting district ranger Adriene Holcomb.
Forest officials will process the mail-in permit requests starting Sept. 8 and call people who applied.
A commercial use permit is required for any individual gathering more than 6 matsutake mushrooms a day. Permits are limited to one per person and cost $250.
Payment is due when the permit is issued. Permit holders must have a valid form of identification and be at least 18 years of age. Matsutake permits are valid through Dec. 31.
After mail in permits are processed, remaining permits will be issued by appointment only at the district offices in Waldport and Reedsport.
People can download and print the request form from the district’s website or by calling the Waldport office at (541) 563-8400 or the Reedsport office at (541) 271-6000 to have one mailed or emailed to you.
