YACHATS — Winter’s shortest day gets a fiery sendoff Saturday, Dec. 21, at Yachats’ annual winter solstice celebration.
A traditional bonfire is the anchor of the event, running from 4-7 p.m. or until the bonfire goes out near the Pavilion behind the Yachats Commons.
Food, music and dancing are on the agenda, with free treats including three types of chili (including vegan), cookies courtesy of the Yachats Ladies Club, and fresh popcorn. Hot cider will be provided by View the Future, Yachats’ nonprofit land conservancy.
Morgen Silverhorn and friends will entertain and lead an acoustic jam session. Musicians interested in playing along are invited to bring their own acoustic instruments. Attendees are urged to dress warmly.
Sponsored by Polly Plumb, the local nonprofit that brings cultural events to Yachats, the celebration looks forward to the days becoming longer, leading up to the summer solstice. A press release from Polly Plumb called the event “A tribute to the sun, offering rebirth and new beginnings; a time for transformation, positive overcoming negative, good luck and renewed creativity.”
