Measured rainfall in Yachats was slightly above normal in February, but the number of days resulted in just a wet, dreary month, according to records from the city and weather watchers around town.
According to “official” records from the city of Yachats’ weather gauge, 8.66 inches of rain fell in February, for a two-month total of 19.97.
The city’s average for February is 8.19 inches, with a minimum over the past 11 years of 5.31 inches and a maximum of 15.54 inches.
But rainfall amounts around Yachats depend a lot on where it is measured.
Jim Adler, who has a gauge three miles up Yachats River Road, measured 13.22 inches of rain in February – the third wettest February in his 13 years of record keeping. Adler’s two-month total for 2021 is 30.30 inches.
Adam Altson, who lives on Ocean View Drive, measured 11.86 inches of rain in February – three inches more than the city’s nearby gauge. But Altson said there were only five days in February where he did not record any rain at all.
“A couple of days only had .03 inches or less, but they still count towards the 23 days that I did record at least a little rain,” Altson said. “That includes every day from Feb. 12-27.”
Don Tucker, a weather watcher who lives two miles north of Yachats, measured 10.05 inches in February. Lance Bloch, who lives on Aqua Vista Drive, measured 9.18 inches, and John Purcell, who lives near King Street, measured 11.10 inches.
