YACHATS — The city of Yachats is accepting applications for the position of mayor and two city council seats for the Nov. 5 general election.
Anyone wanting to run must fill out an application and complete the state filing process by Aug. 27. However, to ensure all signatures are verified and all petitions and documents are complete, the city’s filing deadline is 4 p.m. Aug. 20.
Candidates must be registered to vote at the time of the election and have resided within the city for one year immediately preceding the election.
Applications are available at city hall or on the city’s website.
The mayoral term is two years ending Dec. 31, 2026. The council member terms are four years ending Dec. 31, 2028.
The two council seats up for election have been filled by appointment and their terms end Jan. 1. Barry Collins was appointed last July to fill the remainder of the term following the resignation of Ann Stott. Anthony Muirhead was appointed in April to fill the remainder of Greg Scott’s term.
Yachats Mayor Craig Berdie — who told YachatsNews he plans to run for re-election — is encouraging anyone interested to apply but especially those who serve on commissions and are familiar with working with the city. “It’s an important job -– a way to really impact the city,” Berdie said.

Barbara Corchnoy says
I am all for open and free elections were citizens are encouraged to run for office. That being said I am so pleased to hear that Mayor Craig Berdie is running for re-election. His straightforward approach to the governance of our city is driven by clear vision and commitment. He deserves the time required to complete projects he has been able to begin that serve the citizens of Yachats.
