To the editor:
During the Feb. 1 Yachats Parks & Commons Commission meeting I commented on the Yachats Youth and Family Program and made a motion that the commission vote to acknowledge and thank YYFAP for more than 28 years of service to our community. The motion passed unanimously with all seven commissioners voting yes.
A recording of the meeting is available on the city’s website, and a transcript of the meeting will be available soon. I have been asked to make my comments more widely available, so am submitting this letter.
The occasion for my motion was the completion of the remodel of the former city of Yachats’ offices in the Commons, a major portion of which was paid for by YYFAP. It has moved into the space and is holding an open house Monday, Feb. 14. The move addresses the need for more space and some fire safety concerns of their former space in the Commons’ basement.
For more than 28 years the Yachats Youth and Family Program has been serving a very important need in our community. Through its pre-school and child and youth activity programs, our entire community has benefitted from its work.
As a former business owner and employer I am keenly aware of the challenges working parents face while their children are pre-school age. YYFAP has been supporting parents and the children in our community for years. These are not only the people who serve us in our stores and restaurants, they are also potentially the next generation of Yachatians, and programs like this lend them critical support and help attract young newcomers to our community. YYFAP needs and deserves our continued support.
