Yachats author Andrea Scharf and members of the Tenmile community will discuss how the community worked to save land around Big Creek from development during a presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14 in the Doerfler Family Theater at the Lincoln County Maritime Museum, 333 S.E. Bay Blvd., Newport.
A developer from Hawaii bought 186 acres along Big Creek south of Yachats in 1981 for a proposed destination resort. A group of Yachats and Tenmile residents argued against the development and won land-use battles to protect the land, which was eventually bought by the Nature Conservancy for $4.25 million.
Scharf published a book this year, “Saving Big Creek,” detailing the 35-year land-use battle.
Admission to the presentation is free for members of the Lincoln County Historical Society, $5 for non-members. Children under 12 are free.
