To the editor:
A group of Yachatians have a goal to build and install 100 swallow bird houses in town and up and down the Yachats River valley.
Swallows are one of our more common summer migrants, which comb the skyways for bugs preferring meadows, rivers and open space like our very own community commons. Like many birds they are threatened by climate change.
Two species of swallows — the violet-green swallow and the tree swallow — will nest in bird houses. To protect against cats and snakes, bird houses are typically put on poles, fences, and trees.
We would love your help. If you think you have a suitable site, would like a birdhouse, want to build your own, or support us with supplies or even a contribution, please contact Paul Thompson at 541-991-6774; Wally Orchard at 541-606-0055, or me at 970-217-4424.
