WALDPORT — Kitchen volunteers are needed to help Meals on Wheels bring warm mid-day food to some 60 people from Seal Rock to Yachats.
“Because of our regular volunteers’ holiday plans, or our ‘snowbirds’ being away, we really need a couple of people to help in the kitchen,” said Nicole Person, manager of the site based in the Waldport Community Center.
The need is for shifts from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with a break in between for about one hour.
“You can work just one day, or two or all three,” said Person.
No cooking is involved. Volunteers in the kitchen portion out the meals, pack them for each client and then plate the hot entrees in trays for delivery by the drivers. No driver volunteers are needed at present. People interested may contact Person by phone at 541-563-8796.
Meals on Wheels serves seniors over 60 and their spouses, people with disabilities under age 60, and Native Americans over 55. Recipients are asked to donate what they can, if anything, to help offset costs.
Supported by federal funds, grants and donations, Meals on Wheels also includes sites in Newport, Toledo, Siletz and Lincoln City, as well as in Linn and Benton counties. It’s the largest program offered in the region by the Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments.
