A student from Toledo High School was killed about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 5, when he was thrown from a truck during a crash on Logsden Road near Siltez.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office identified the boy as Robert Kirkland, a sophomore at Toledo High. The Lincoln County School District sent a trauma team to the school Thursday to help students and staff.
The sheriff’s office said its preliminary investigation indicated a pickup truck driven by one juvenile with two passengers were heading west on Logsden Road when the driver lost control of the truck while rounding a curve. The vehicle left the road and Franklin was thrown out. First responders and emergency medical personnel were unable to save him and he died at the scene.
Deputies said Kirkland was not wearing his seatbelt. The driver and passenger, who told investigators they were wearing their seat belts, were taken to Samaritan Pacific Community Hospital in Newport with minor injuries.
Logsden Road was closed intermittently for approximately five hours during the investigation. The sheriff’s office said the crash remains under investigation.
