The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is offering a free opportunity for the public to shred sensitive documents from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 in the parking lot of the county courthouse, 225 W. Olive St., Newport.
The effort is to help combat identity theft and financial fraud.
People are encouraged to bring paper documents, files, notebooks, canceled checks, or any other document that contain personal or sensitive information. It will also accept CDs and DVDs that contain personal or sensitive information.
In a news release, the sheriff’s office said the shredding be conducted by an iSecure truck stationed in the parking lot and is 100 percent secure.
There is no limit to the amount of shredding that people may bring, the sheriff’s office said, but once the truck is full it will not accept any more documents.
Items that people should shred and not put in the trash include, expired or unused credit and debit cards, credit card statements, pre-approved credit card offers and applications, bank, investment and pension account statements, canceled checks, pay stubs, phone and utility bills, tax returns and statements, medical records or bills, insurance policy or claim information, and expired identification documents.
