Safeway stores in Newport and Florence and among the 62 that Kroger has identified to sell to another grocery chain to help win approval for its proposed merger with Albertsons.
In a bid to mollify antitrust regulators, Kroger and Albertsons the two companies said they would sell more than 500 stores to New Hampshire-based C&S Wholesale Grocers for $2.9 billion. The list shows that Kroger and Albertsons plan to sell off 62 stores in Oregon, 124 in Washington and 10 in Idaho to C&S. Before last week the companies had not disclosed which stores would be sold.
The Safeway store in Newport is part of the Albertson’s chain and is located just to the north of Kroger’s Fred Meyer store. The Safeway store in Florence is located in the center of town along U.S. Highway 101 two miles south of the Fred Meyer store on the north edge of the city.
Kroger released the locations of the stores it would sell off to a competitor to secure regulatory approval for its $24.6 billion proposed merger with Albertsons. Kroger, the parent company of Fred Meyer and QFC, announced plans to acquire rival Albertsons, which owns Safeway, in October 2022.
