NEWPORT – Oregon Coast Community College is looking for summer and fall students – and people to teach community education non-credit courses.
Registration is opened for summer and fall terms at the Newport-based college, which has smaller campuses in Waldport and Lincoln City. Summer term begins July 5 and ends Aug. 20.
Fall term will include a wider selection of courses and begins Sept. 26 and ends Dec. 10.
OCCC also offers district residents age 60 or older the ability to take credit courses tuition-free, although some course and college fees could apply.
The college will again offer “On-the-Spot” admission sessions at Newport and Lincoln City campuses June 22, July 11, Aug. 2, and Aug. 25. During these events, OCCC staff help students get admitted to the college, register for classes and explain financial aid opportunities.
The college is also looking for expand its community education classes in the fall and is reaching out to people interested in teaching non-credit classes as an independent contractor.
Past courses have ranged from Turkish history and culture, memoir writing, oil painting, Dungeons & Dragons, whale watching or mussel harvesting and basic language instruction in French, German, Spanish, and American Sign Language.
“Teaching community education is a great way to engage with our community,” said Tonia Anderson, OCCC’s North County coordinator and a lead organizer of the college’s growing noncredit programming. “The college provides classrooms and, where it’s needed, cutting-edge technology to aid in the delivery of your courses.”
The college offers instructors the chance to choose the location of their courses – Waldport, Newport, and Lincoln City.”
Anderson will host a meeting for potential instructors at 9 a.m. June 28 at OCCC’s center in Lincoln City. People can also attend the meeting via Zoom by calling Anderson at 541-994-4166.
People can also submit course proposals from the link at the top of the college’s community education webpage. Course proposals for the fall term are due no later than July 3. The term runs from Sept. 19 to Dec. 10.
