To the editor:
As a full-time Yachats’ resident and property owner, I would like the Yachats Rural Fire Protection District’s sale of the four commercially zoned tax lots containing its former downtown station to include development of attainable/affordable employee housing. The need is there and land availability at good locations scarce. Too many towns delay affordability actions until options and solutions disappear.
In addition to apartments, I urge the Fire District board to consider a non-traditional co-living community (shared kitchens, shared suites, leased private bedrooms, utilities included and like benefits), as well as the more recent foray into tiny homes for rent or purchase. There are developers specializing in these types of housing/management. It could even be pursued as a public/private partnership, taking advantage of numerous grants and tax credits. Don’t let this opportunity get away, it’s too important to our workforce, local economy and community cohesion.

In response to the post by John Ayer suggesting possible uses for the old fire station I’d very much like to agree with his suggestions. Forward thinking and solving much needed housing issues. Thank you John.
