NEWPORT — One man is dead and another has been detained following a shooting just before 1 p.m. Wednesday on the Yaquina Bay Bridge.
Newport police officers immediately detained a man after responding to the bridge about 12:54 p.m, according to Police Chief Jason Malloy.
They found the body of a man who had been shot at least once on the bridge’s west walkway, Malloy said.
Traffic on the 600-foot arch bridge was closed during a two-hour investigation. Police said there is no further threat to the community.
Facebook posts indicating the bridge would be closed into the night sent hundreds of commuters seeking the few alternative routes south. Many tried to back east to Toledo and then south onto one-lane Forest Service roads that caused issues and emergency calls to agencies between there and the Beaver Creek area north of Seal Rock.
