NEWPORT – A person who threatened Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies with a rifle in the South Beach area was shot and wounded Wednesday and was flown to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis, police said.
Sheriff Curtis Landers said 9-1-1 dispatch received a call at 7:33 a.m. Wednesday of an armed person walking around with a rifle near 82nd Street and Southwest Abalone Street south of Newport.
Deputies arrived 18 minutes later and encountered a subject with a rifle and repeatedly told the person to drop the rifle. The subject pointed the rifle at deputies and one deputy shot the subject.
The Lincoln County Major Crime Team was called to investigate, and the Oregon State Police is the lead agency over the investigation.
Landers said the names of the deputies and the wounded person will be released later, along with further information regarding the investigation by state police.
No sheriff’s deputies were injured and the deputies involved deputies were put on paid administrative leave, Landers said, which is customary following a shooting.
