As expected, January was a wet month in and around Yachats. But how wet depends on where you live.
The “official” measurement for the city of Yachats as measured by a gauge at the wastewater treatment plant showed 11.31 inches of rain fell in January – well above the 10-year average at the site.
Rainfall amounts were slightly higher to very much higher elsewhere around Yachats.
A manual gauge used by Lance Bloch a half-mile north of the wastewater plant measured 12 inches in January. Donald Tucker, who lives two miles north of Yachats on the east side of U.S. Highway 101, measured 14.27 inches. Adam Altson, who has a manual gauge just a block from the city’s treatment plant, measured 15.41 inches of rain. And, Jim Adler, who has an automatic gauge three miles up the Yachats River measured 17.08 inches of rain in January – the third-wettest January in his 13 years of record-keeping.
By the city’s records going back 10 years, it was a wetter than average month — the average rainfall measured at the city’s gauge is 8.05 inches of rain in January.

Lynn Schellhase says
The rain gauge stopped reporting on January 26th with 9.33 inches of rain, so the actual amount of rainfall at the official Yachats site should be higher and more in line with measurements of nearby reporters.
