The Oregon Department of Transportation reopened Highway 34 between Alsea and Philomath on Friday afternoon for the Memorial Day weekend but will close it again all day Thursday, May 30.
On Thursday, ODOT is recommending travelers use U.S. 20 via Newport.
ODOT closed the highway Friday morning six miles west of its intersection with U.S. 20 to begin removal of a semi-truck and trailer hauling logging equipment that crashed Wednesday, May 22. But it could not complete the removal, so the agency reopened the highway and will finish the job from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 30.
There will be no through traffic — only local travel — while the equipment is removed. The highway will be closed from milepost 50 to milepost 53.
ODOT advises taking U.S. 20 as a detour. Travelers can also check Tripcheck.com or call 5-1-1 for road conditions.
