Firefighters in the Siuslaw National Forest are wrapping up their work on two fires started by lightning in late August.
The agency said Tuesday that the 119-acre Three Buttes fire northeast of Florence has not increased in size in over a week and is 56 percent contained. Since Saturday, the area has received nearly four inches of rain, the agency said, and one 13-member crew is staying to monitor the fire and help with road repair work.
This week an excavator will decommission Forest Road 5854, which was reopened as part of the firefighting effort. With the amount of rain the fire has received, fire mangers feel comfortable closing this road again, the agency said in a news release.
While suppression repair work continues, several popular forest roads remain partially closed including Forest Road 58 and Forest Road 1057. The Upper North Fork Siuslaw Road is open.
The Rock Creek Fire near Marys Peak was determined “controlled” last week at 13 acres. All suppression repair is complete on this incident. The fire started Aug. 25 following a lightning storm.
The agency also announced Tuesday that with the arrival of wet fall weather, all public use restrictions for fire have been rescinded and fire danger is “low” on the Siuslaw National Forest. While campfires are now allowed, Forest Service officials urge everyone to exercise caution if they have a campfire.
