WALDPORT – Firefighters from Waldport, Yachats and Newport stopped a slash burn that re-ignited during a wind and rainstorm late Sunday night from getting into trees near the Dahl Industrial Park.
A large slash pile from a summer logging operation on property owned by Gene Dahl that was thought to be out re-ignited during Sunday’s windstorm. Embers then started spot fires about 11:25 p.m. and threatened a line of trees on the north edge of the property, adjacent to the industrial park, said Chief Jamie Mason of Central Oregon Coast Fire & Rescue.
Three pieces of equipment from COCF&R, an engine and brush rig from Yachats Fire and a brush rig from Newport responded to the fire, Mason said.
Rather than try to extinguish the original slash pile and other smaller piles in the dark, Mason said firefighters stopped the blaze from spreading into nearby standing trees. There were no homes or structures in the area.
Firefighters in a brush rig spent the night at the scene before others returned Monday morning to make sure everything was extinguished.
