YACHATS — A retired astrophysics professor is next on the roster of speakers from the Yachats Academy of Arts & Sciences.
Yachats resident Craig Hogan will speak on “Beyond the Sky: A guided historical tour from here and now to the edges of space and time” at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 3 in the multipurpose room at the Commons.
“It’s a broad-ranging talk, with an emphasis on black holes and cosmology,” explained Hogan, who has taught astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Arizona, the University of Washington and the University of Chicago. He moved to Yachats in 2021.
The one-hour talk will be followed by discussion. A $5 donation is requested for all YAAS presentations, with funds helping pay for future presentations, and for YAAS-donated materials for the Commons.
“Saving Yachats Ridge” will be the subject of the next YAAS presentation at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 21 also at the Commons. John Theilacker and Joanne Kittel will speak on the efforts of local land conservancy View The Future to preserve the 1,100-acre tract of coastal hills.
Slated for Sunday, May 19 is Sarah Walker of the Klamath Bird Observatory. She will speak on tracking the Western Purple Martin through its annual migration including from Yachats to Brazil.
Inactive during the pandemic, YAAS re-launched its speaker series in January. The group provides a forum for lectures and discussion in the arts, sciences and humanities.
