The Lincoln County School District board voted 4-0 Tuesday night to appoint Lincoln City councilor Mitch Parsons to fill the Zone 1 position left vacant by Megan Cawley’s resignation in November.
Parsons was the lone applicant for the unpaid, volunteer position and was immediately sworn in.
Zone 1 includes the north county voting precincts of Delake, Oceanlake, Sunset West, Sunset East, and Rose Lodge. The position will be on the May ballot for a new four-year term beginning July 1.
Parsons has lived in Lincoln City for 13 years, has been on its city council for six years and is currently its president. He is also on the board of the Housing Authority of Lincoln County and has been involved with numerous local nonprofits. Parsons and his wife have three children, one a graduate of Taft 7-12 where their youngest is a freshman.
“My motivation for joining the school board comes from my commitment to public service and desire to enhance education in our community,” Parsons said in a statement released by the district.
It is the second board appointment in the last seven months. Newport police chief Jason Malloy was appointed to the Zone 3 seat last July, replacing Mike Rawles.
