WALDPORT – As wildfires consume hundreds of thousands of acres of land in eastern Oregon, staff and volunteers at Central Oregon Coast Fire & Rescue are offering landowners a chance Saturday to learn how to protect their property.
The district is holding an open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at its main station in downtown Waldport where homeowners can learn about wildland fire preparation and prevention. There will be other firefighting organizations or emergency service agencies there to talk about defensible spaces, “go” bags, evacuation terminology and preparing for power outages.
“It’s important to get the information out now,” said COCF&R Chief Jamie Mason as the coast and nearby forests hit the driest part of the summer.
Landowners can also call the district office to have volunteer Charlie Lesiecki come to their property to assess their vulnerability to fire and make suggestions for improvements.
Under the state’s conflagration act, the COCF&R district and firefighters from Seal Rock on Thursday sent two personnel each to battle the 136,000-acre Lone Rock fire in eastern Oregon.
