An Alaska man was killed Tuesday evening when he swerved into oncoming traffic on U.S. Highway 20 four miles east of Newport and collided with a pickup truck.
Killed was James R. Lebo, 70, of Wrangell, Alaska, Oregon State Police said.
Police said their preliminary investigation indicated that Lebo was driving east in a Suzuki Sidekick about 5 p.m. Tuesday when it veered into the on-coming lane of travel and collided head-on with a westbound Toyota Tacoma operated by Trevor L. Hutchison, 49, of Toledo.
Police said Lebo died at the scene; Hutchinson was not injured.
The highway was impacted for approximately 2.5 hours during the investigation. State police were assisted by the Toledo Police Department, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies, the Toledo Fire and Newport fire departments and Oregon Department of Transportation crews.
