GLENEDEN BEACH – A 57-year-old Hillsboro man died Friday afternoon when his bicycle collided with an empty log truck just north of Fogarty Creek State Park.
Oregon State Police said Bradley J. Stark of Hillsboro was riding south on his bike “when for unknown reasons it contacted the side” of an empty log truck driven by Richard Wiser of Newport. Police said Stark died at the scene.
Police said their investigation of the incident, when finished, will go to the Lincoln County district attorney’s office for review.
The highway was closed or partially closed for four hours during the police reconstruction investigation.
Katrina Wynne says
Thank you for reporting this sad incident.
Logging trucks also travel the Yachats River Road as do school buses, fire trucks, delivery and other work trucks, RVs, and more.
It is significantly more dangerous than Highway 101, which at least has bike lanes on the shoulders.
The YRR doesn’t even have shoulders, with about 11 blind curves going each direction, east/west, and 2-3 passing areas along the over 7 miles of county road highway (55 mph speed limit).
I hope this raises awareness of these dangers for all vehicles.
It would hurt my heart to hear a bicyclist and motor vehicle caused harm to each other.
