YACHATS – While ignoring the snow storm for a moment, the Yachats area received lower than average amounts of rain in February, according to six weather watchers who supply regular measurements to YachatsNews.
But the snow is the story.
While there was a small accumulation of snow along the coastline the last week of February, it was a very different story inland. Residents of the Yachats River valley saw 7-12 inches of snow Feb. 23-24 – and much of it is still there.
Back to rain.
The “official” city rainfall measurement at the wastewater treatment was 5.71 inches in February compared with a 10-year average of 8.19 inches. The city’s two-month total is 15.07.
Adam Altson, who lives a block from the plant, measured 5.92 inches in February and has 16.14 inches for two months. Donald Tucker, who lives two miles north of Yachats, had 6.02 inches in February and 16 inches so far in 2023.
But in addition to snow, it’s also a different story for rainfall up the Yachats River valley.
Jim Adler, who lives at the three-mile mark, recorded 8.41 inches of rain in February compared with his 14-year average of 10.76 inches. He’s measured 23.75 inches of rain so far this year.
Bob Williams, who lives at the eight-mile mark, measured 12.36 inches of rain in February and has 30.12 inches for the first two months of the year. Snowfall at his house was 10 inches.
And, Jean-Marc Rolland, who lives at the 10-mile mark, had 9.65 inches of rain in February, 27.75 inches for the two months and had 12 inches of snow Feb. 23-24.
