The multipurpose room in the Yachats Commons will be closed for three weeks starting Monday, March 4 to replace its floor.
The work was originally supposed to have been done in early January, but hit a snag when contractors removed the top layer of floor and vinyl tiles underneath it pulled up. That meant the new floor couldn’t be installed over the old tiles without voiding warranties on it. The city, under a new state law, also had to get the tiles tested for asbestos. After two weeks those tests came back negative.
The tiles had been glued down onto the room’s original hardwood floor in the 1970s. The floor is being replaced because the current one installed in 2013 began failing.
Mike Powell of M. Powell Design and Construction of Waldport is the contractor on the $34,000 project. The city received a $8,500 refund from Alsea Bay and Granite, which installed the floor that failed.
Classes scheduled for the multipurpose room during the closure have been notified; most are moving to the Yachats Lions Club building or room 8 in the Commons.
Heather Hoen, the city’s facilities manager, said the floor is scheduled to be finished in time for the annual Crafts on the Coast art fair March 23-24.
